Small capers
Capers are the unopened flower buds of the shrub Capparis spinosa, which comes from the Mediterranean region. These small buds are carefully hand-picked and then pickled in vinegar to develop their characteristic slightly tangy flavor. They are an important component of Mediterranean cuisine, giving dishes a special aroma and intensity.
Capers are rich in antioxidants; the flavonoids they contain can help reduce inflammatory processes in the body. Their fiber content promotes healthy bowel function and can help prevent constipation. Some studies suggest that capers may help regulate blood sugar levels. Flavonoids can improve blood circulation and help reduce cholesterol levels.
Capers are very versatile and are used in various dishes:
In salads—adds a salty, tangy flavor accent, for example in classic Niçoise salad.
In sauces—an important ingredient in sauces such as tartar sauce or puttanesca.
In fish and meat dishes—an excellent complement to smoked and lightly salted salmon, chicken, or beef dishes.
In pizza and pasta dishes—adds a distinctive Mediterranean flavor note to pasta dishes and pizzas.
